About Makatzak Narrasti

It has been said more than once that producing quality txakoli in Gipuzkoa (Basque Country) in a natural way, that is, without the use of chemical products, is an impossible challenge. The high rainfall and humidity in the area are conducive to the generation of mildew and powdery mildew. Fortunately, however, there is always someone who takes the opposite view. Makatzak Wild Wines, a new project formed by Aitor Irazu and his cousin Jon Estebanez, have achieved the impossible in the 3 hectares of vineyards they cultivate in Aia (Gipuzkoa). A special vineyard, Sorgintxulo (place, hiding place or witches’ hole), which had been abandonned for five years and which, thanks to its steep slope and mainly southern exposure, favours good ripening for the native Hondarribi Zuri grape.

But if there is one magical thing about this vineyard, it is what you cannot see, what lies beneath a blanket of plants and grasses. Shallow soils with less organic matter than usual in the area, and with slate as a base. The result is Makatzak Narrasti, a natural white wine made from the Hondarribi Zuri variety which is cultivated using organic, regenerative and biodynamic viticulture, respecting the biodiversity of the forests and grasslands with spontaneous vegetation cover around the vineyard. The grapes are harvested by hand in 10 kg boxes, with several passes to find the best possible ripening point. Once in the winery, minimal intervention winemaking is carried out. First, the best grapes are selected, destemmed and pressed, and the resulting must is fermented spontaneously with native yeasts without the addition of oenological products. Finally the wine is bottled without being filtered.

This is how Makatzak Narrasti is made. A txakoli that expresses the landscape, the soil, the climate, and all the magic of the Hondarrabi Zuri without interventions that could alter the essence of the place. A challenge that shows that in Gipuzkoa, despite the climatic conditions, it is possible to produce excellent natural wines.

 

2022

Makatzak Narrasti 2022 is a light and highly aromatic white wine. On the nose, it features intense aromas of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, accompanied by citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit. On the palate, it is fresh and well-balanced, with a lively acidity that makes it very refreshing. Its finish is clean and persistent, leaving a pleasant fruity aftertaste. Perfect for those seeking an easy-drinking white wine with great aromatic expression.

Makatzak Narrasti 2021 is an aromatic white wine with citrus fragrances accompanied by floral notes and mineral hints. On the palate it is fresh, juicy and easy to drink. A wine with a marked acidity, a light mid-palate and a pleasant finish.
